Annual Domestic Resurrection Circus

The Annual Domestic Resurrection Circus, an extraordinary event of the Bread and Puppet Theater combining hilarity and satire with deep seriousness and mystery, has ceased to exist in its customary form. This painting is a celebration and memorial of the full moon weekends in August when we would stroll over the summer meadows and through the pine forest, encountering friends and acquaintances and watching side shows. Having spread our blankets for a picnic, laughing and cheering the Circus, we would be moved and awed by the Pageant at dusk. The painting is also my tribute to Peter and Elka Schumann who revived the old communal art form of giant puppets telling sacred and profane stories, poking fun, criticizing, and in the words of Peter Schumann, “making a conscious effort to define our situation in this century, this country and the world.”

On Display At
Burlington International Airport. It is in the phone booth area of Gates 1-8 on the 2nd floor.
